Making the Most of Therapy

Commitment and energy are required to maximize the benefits of therapy.  To maintain the emotional energy required by therapy, it is essential to keep your physical health intact.  Eat well, exercise and limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine.

Your therapist can't be with you every day.  Keep a journal and write down insights and feelings as they come to you.  These can become the starting point for your next session.

Be patient and persevere.  Your problems developed over a period of years and it will take time to learn different approaches to life.  Getting to the root of the problem is important in order to prevent repetition of self-defeating behaviors.

Take risks.  Challenge yourself to look at new ideas and to experiment with new behaviors, even if you feel awkward or foolish at first.  Reading books recommended by your therapist can help you understand the concepts used in therapy and speed progress.

Develop a support system.  Cultivate relationships with people who accept and applaud you for taking positive steps to improve your life.
